How Can I Clean Spilled Coffee Off Of Some Of My Bare Photographs Without Damaging Them?

20 July 2009 in Coffee maker

I accidently spilled my coffee all over some pictures i had laying on my table. I really do not want to ruin the pictures by trying things out. Please help if able! Thanks.

  1. If they are photographic, not inkjet, wash them quickly under warm soapy water (use a few spots of washing up liquid and some cotton wool).
Once you’ve cleaned them, rinse them thoroughly, then most importantly swab them with a wrung out cotton wool ball to remove any droplets on the surface, then force dry them with a hairdryer (not too hot).
.. I used to do this to rescue dirty negs in the old days, it works for prints too. The most important thing is to dry them reasonably quickly as any spots left on the surface will cause watermarks.
    Good luck with it!

  3. Photographic paper, not inkjet or printer paper. Suggest you use just plain water and soak them for a few minute. If the coffee stains are still on the print, lightly rubbing the area might help in removing the spots. In normal photo printing process the last step is to wash the print in plain water. For glossy prints dry face down on a cleaned glass surface or for matte, lay on glass face up and lightly squeegee the water off the photograph.
Soap might cause some damage to the emulsion of the print.
