How Come Some People Can Drink Loads Of Coffee And Others Can’t?

21 July 2009 in Coffee maker

I can normally only drink 3 cups of coffee and i’m totally wired. Any more and I feel terrible. Where as some people I know can drink 20 cups a day one after another and be fine with it, even have one just before going to bed and sleep fine.
Is there any reason why some people can and some people can’t drink that much coffee?

  1. Everyone has a different biological make-up…some people are able to tolerate certain chemicals and others aren’t…hence why some people have allergies and other don’t and also why some people are more prone to becoming alcoholics than others.

  3. Everyone is different, but 1-3 cups is normal. I usually have one or two whenever I have them, but I can drink an entire pot & go straight to sleep (even though my hands are shaking). My uncle was up all night after 1 soda.
It takes about 80 cups to kill the average person, so 20 is not fatal. It is kind of the coffee equivalent of a $500 a day cocaine habit.

  5. It has to do with your tolerance and your body chemistry. My mom & I can drink any amount of coffee and it has no effect on us. I’ll drink it and go to bed right away. We just love the taste, whereas if my dad drinks it, his heart palpitates. He has a “heart murmur” and I don’t know if that has anything to do with it.

  7. Being a coffee drinker for almost 15 years really depends on what your body can handle.
Another factor is the strength of the coffee you drink.

  9. Hi:
Anyone who drinks 20 cups of coffee is nuts. One or two cups a day is plenty. People need to learn and drink plain water which is good for your body.
