How Do You Make A Tasty Pot Of Coffee?
29 June 2009 in Coffee makerI don’t really have much leeway with the beans and pot and what not. But, are there any simple tips and tricks that make a home made cup of coffee taste good? Mine usually tastes a bit bitter and sour. But, I want to be able to make coffee in the morning for my boyfriend if I stay over.
I don’t like flavored coffee’s or cream’s, what brand do you suggest? I usually use folgers(sp?).

The brand of coffee has a lot to do with it – 8 o’clock and Dunkin Donuts got the highest ratings from Consumer reports, but a pinch of cinnamon on the ground coffee before brewing adds a nice touch.
What’s your grounds to water ratio? Is the coffee maker clean? I use about 1/3 to 1/2 cup grounds for a standard 12 cup drip coffee maker. If it’s still bitter, put a dash of salt (a very light dash) on top of the grounds before brewing. To clean coffee maker put about a quarter cup bleach (or vinegar, if you’d rather) in the water reservoir, fill the rest of the way with water and run it through. Rinse by running several cycles of just water. Folgers is good, Kirkland (Costco brand) isn’t bad, Maxwell House is disgusting.
The biggest thing is use good water. Buy gallons of spring water or distilled water if you live in an area that doesn’t have the best tasting water (Florida is a good example), it makes a HUGE difference. Than when you make the coffee the rule is 1 tablespoon of grinds per cup you are making. If you like a light coffee check what you are buying to be sure it is a light to medium roast, they don’t tend to be as bitter as dark roasts. You might have to try a few different brands to find one you like.
My old roommate told me about gevalia to get a free coffee maker. I ordered their breakfast blend and really enjoyed it, but it’s kind of expensive so I cancelled after I got the first order and free coffee maker. Don’t forget to cancel though if you do it!
