You can try using plain vinegar. However, then you will have to wash the carpet to get the vinegar smell out.

I use Woolite, rub in with a rag. Let it sit for about 15 mins. Rinse and blot. Should be a major improvement.

Folex. I have used this on both synthetic and natural-fiber carpets to remove coffee, red wine, grape juice, baby puke, and a host of unidentifiable stains. Some of those stains were a couple of years old. I also use it to remove grease and other stains from laundry. You can find it a home improvement stores. Their URL is http://www.folexcompany.com/.

Never use a chemical on your carpet, use an enzymatic cleaner. I've spilled coffee, tea, red wine, etc. on my carpets. All I do is mix the oxiclean with the hottest tap water available, pour on stain (a cup or so of the solution), let sit for 30 minutes. Blot up and rinse with hot tap water. Blot again and rinse again. Put a white bath towel over the stain, pile a couple of heavy hardbound books on the towel and let sit overnight or 24 hours. Stain should come up by a wicking action as the spot dries.
