How To Clean / Deoderize A Stainless Steel Thermos Used For Coffee?
2 August 2009 in Coffee makerI use it everyday – and rinse when empty – but coffee residue and stains still build up.
It’s starting to affect the flavor of the coffee.
I’ve tried soaking in soapy water, white vinegar, and just letting it air out. It helps for a week or so, but the stains are still there, and the odor returns.
(The odor is just stale coffee, btw.)

put just a few tablespoons of bleach in the thermos, swish it around then fill with water and let set for about 10 minutes.
RINSE WELL AND MANY TIMES. (make sure you got all of the bleach out- you should not be able to smell any chlorine when done- use hot water)
I have done this to a 65 year old Stanley Aladdin Vacuum bottle and it is so shiny inside you can see your reflection in it
Alternatively, they do make vacuum bottle brushes for cleaning them out, but I have found those to not work well.
Try baking soda, or one of the coffee pot cleaners sold on the market.
I suggest you try chlorine bleach. It won’t hurt the metal and it won’t hurt you if you rinse it out thoroughly after letting it set for an hour or so. It will clear the stains and eliminate the odor.
If you can find someone who shops at Melaleuca, try Sol-U-Mel. If it doesn’t work, you can send it back for a full refund. It cleans, disinfects and deodorizes and is non-toxic, so it won’t kill you if your rinsing isn’t as thorough as it should be (not so if you use bleach, which is the #1 household poison in the US). I use it to get Kool-Aid out of carpet, ballpoint pen off of skin, nail polish off of the counter and crayon off of walls -it should be able to take out some coffee stains.
