What’s The Best Kind Of Coffee To Make At Home?

1 August 2009 in Coffee maker

I really like McDonalds coffee, but I can’t afford to eat out every morning, so I wish I could make my own. But I really don’t know how very well, and usually buy instant coffee. I ‘would’ buy a new coffee pot, if I knew I could make real good coffee, but not sure what to buy or how to make it. Thanks for any advice!

  1. I NEVER “made coffee” at home until this last year because I was the only one who really drank it. In fact, I didn’t even own a coffee maker….I would borrow one when we entertained and have someone else make the coffee.
I usually just got my coffee at our local Starbucks coffee shop, etc.
My 40 year old son (a former pro-chef) makes his own coffee at home every morning and when I started cutting back on eating out (too much of my money goes to the gas pumps these days)…..he got me started making my own coffee at home. I loved his coffee and asked him to show me how he made it.
Anyway…..I learned that fresh ground…that’s fresh ground for each pot…is the only way to go if you only make one pot of coffee a day. Other wise your bag (or can) of pre-ground coffee will be stale long before you ever finish it all.
Also….while some people insist that a cup of coffee HAS to be freshly brewed to taste good ….I found that if you start out with good brand of freshly ground coffee…. the pot will taste good all day! Fresh ground for each pot is the key.

Anyway….I bought one of those little electric coffee bean grinders at Wal-mart (mine cost about 21 bucks) a cheapee electric coffee maker (under 20 bucks), a reuseable coffee filter (6 bucks…I hate the paper ones) and a one pound bag of Starbuck brand “whole bean” House Blend at my local grocery store (9 bucks). (They sell this coffee at most Wal-mart stores with a grocery section too.)
I like my coffee a bit on the stronge side so I grind up 4 “tablespoon size” scoops of beans for a full pot (10 cups) of water and 2 scoops for a half pot.
Just reminder to wash the bowl of the grinder out after each use to prevent old stale coffee grinds with getting mixed into the fresh ones each morning.
Anyway, I now make coffee that even my husband will drink as well as my 34 year son (who both normally hate coffee) when he comes over.

  3. I personally like Community Coffee, out of New Orleans, but I don’t know if they sell it where you live. Its strong like McDonald’s coffee. It has chicory in it, which I love.
And it can sit on the burner for a couple of hours without getting that bitter taste, unlike most household brands, so you can enjoy a pot all morning on the weekends.

  5. Definitely banish instant coffee from your life! :D
I think the other suggestions are very good.
I’d also add Dunkin Donuts coffee. They sell bags of beans in the store, and they usually offer specials on them. (You’d need to get a small coffee grinder; I paid $20 for a good one.)
Treat yourself on your birthday and get a bag of Jamaican Blue Mountain beans; it’s the best coffee there is.
As for a coffee maker, if you’re living alone, you might be best off with a Bodum coffee press. It makes two servings, I think. It will come with instructions.
You can pick up a cheap coffee maker at Wal-Mart, but the coffee doesn’t taste good unless you make 4-6 cups at a time.
If you buy preground coffee, keep it in the fridge. If you buy beans, store them in the freezer and grind a small batch at a time.
When you don’t have much money, coffee is a great hobby to have. It’s inexpensive, it’s a nice treat, and it’s fun to try different types of beans! :D

Thanks ladybugs! I think you can buy Community Coffee online.

  7. Just get one of these:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coffee_pot
You can get them quite cheaply. Last one I got was from Ikea. You can get different sizes too – they’re sometimes called expresso coffee makers, but if you got a big one, you’d be able to get a big coffee out of it.
The coffee I buy at the moment is Chilean. Columbian is more expensive where I lve, but I prefer the taste of the Chilean.

  9. Mr. Coffee and others make a small (up to 4 cup) pot, that makes really good coffee. I had one for years, then graduated to a larger one. You can also get a metal lifetime filter for it and I would suggest Folgers breakfast blend or Eight o’clock for starters.
